- "Growing the PIE": on 30 April 2019 the 3rd audit firm in a short period of time in row announced to cease its statutory audit services to NL Public Interest Entities (PIE). The market demand for PIE audit services increases due to an enlarged scope of the legal PIE definition and simultaneously supply (from 9 to 6 licensed CPA firms) decreases. Hence society faces a gap between on one hand regulatory requirements and on the other hand its aim to lower market entry barriers for a.o. regulated financial institutions and public capital market listed companies. The enlarged scope of the PIE definition is a result of a generally increasing societal development of forcing companies to be accountable on an increasing number of topics, including but not limited to finance, going concern, sustainability, compliance laws & regulation and fraud.
